‘Tis the season for migration! Nope, we’re not talking Canadian geese (although if I had wings, I’d be flappin’ em up north as fast as I could). The migration we’re seeing and hearing about is all digital and seems to be predominantly one-way: from traditional websites to Facebook and other social media platforms.
On the heels of the US State Department announcing the transition of their cultural/policy communications to a social media focus, we’re now hearing rumors that automotive big wig Nissan is toying with the idea of housing their entire customer service operation on Facebook. That is a HUGE point for the “Facebook isn’t a fad” argument. Just a few years ago, it was unheard of to replace a phone number in an ad with a web address. And now, ads/billboards/etc. with no URL’s is a rarity.
So, this could just be the next big shift in information delivery. Sure, social media has been a huge info source for a while now, but in tandem with traditional sources like websites and good, old-fashioned phone calls. Far-reaching and “I-can’t-believe-this-is-happening” occurrences like revolution in Egypt and the US Presidential election process being heavily played out in social media have governments and corporations alike thinking twice about social media. No longer is social media considered a passing fad or only useful for light, “cocktail party” type conversations and engagement. We now see these entities putting a very large portion (or all) of their eggs in the social media basket in the hopes that the next “revolution” is one of larger and more engaged customer bases for their brands/messages.
Are you packing your boxes and making the move, either completely or partially? And, if so, how are you ramping up your social media presence so that your new visitors feel welcomed and informed? We’d love to hear what you’re doing!
