Most marketers in general, and definitely me specifically, are pretty particular when it comes to consistency – in branding, messaging, color use, etc. And in no other case am I MORE particular than when it comes to spelling and grammar. So you can imagine what it’s like for me to see various spellings of the same word used in the press and marketing pieces – sometimes within mere centimeters of each other.
What? You can’t imagine? It’s like scratching your nails on a chalkboard while eating Kleenex. There’s not much worse than that.
So, I make a plea… No, actually it’s just a simple request: Can we agree to drop the “e” in the plural form of mango and avocado? See? Simple!
Happiness is – print ads promoting MANGOS alongside an article detailing the upcoming Brazilian crop of MANGOS, instead of MANGOES. The “e/no e” debate has been raging (ok, maybe not raging) within and outside of our industry for years with folks chiming in on both sides of the debate. I really like Erickson Farm’s take: “We have adopted MANGOS because it is easier to fit on signs and is the same in English and Spanish.”
Sure, I understand that both are accepted. But don’t we as marketers, as an industry, as human beings want more than just acceptance? We want to excel! And one characteristic of excellent marketing is consistency. Starting today, I’m personally making the decision to drop the “e” in the work I produce (unless a client has already invested in a tattoo or giant mural that includes it). So, who’s with me?
